Dive Insurance

Health insurance abroad - what about it?

What will and will not be covered abroad in 2023? And is additional insurance or diving insurance a luxury or necessity ?

Safety first

Scuba diving is a very safe activity, but there always remains a risk factor so proper diving insurance is desirable. This is because during diving, your body is exposed to high pressures, which causes you to inhale air or a gas mixture under high pressure, among other things.

At most diving schools on Koh Tao, you will fill out a medical questionnaire, which is in English. At Impian Divers this is not the case, all documents are in Dutch and in addition we give a very specific and clear explanation of any risks during diving activities.

We also never take unnecessary risks such as going night diving in bad weather, even though this is not always appreciated.

All of our executives are Medical Trained, Oxygen & AED provider instructors, with extensive knowledge on how to correctly assess (emergency) situations. However, we should never deviate from a doctor’s medical advice.

During dive training you are insured for diving related accidents under specific conditions :

  • Decompression disease and/or
  • Lung accidents

If you choose an I.D.D training you are during a dive course insured through I.D.D Netherlands for diving related accidents: decompression sickness and/or lung accidents, under the following conditions:

  • Excess of 6,000 THB
  • maximum coverage : 50,000 Euro
  • Expenses first through your travel insurance or health insurance.

PADI dies not offer an insurance coverage, but you will be insured insured up to 200,000 Thai baht through our Thai dive shop insurance.

  • Excess of 6,000 THB
  • maximum coverage : 200,000 THB
  • Other costs are for your travel or health insurance.

Ocean Medical clinic Mae Haad

Only the Ocean Medical clinic Mae Haad cooperates the staff members of the Subaqautic Safety Service on Koh Samui.

This is the only Koh Tao clinic where diving insurance claims will be in effect. At all other Koh Tao clinics, our insurance conditions are not possible, nor are the re-compression room staff members allowed for assistance, this with the following disadvantages:

  • Unnecessary evacuation to an (expensive) Koh Samui hospital
  • Unnecessarily long recording, and sometimes delayed re-compression treatment
  • High expenses

Visit doctor for statement Fit-to-Dive is possible from 09:00 and an Impian executive will assist you with this. Do keep in mind boat departure time for afternoon dive.
Cost: 200 Thai baht

Frequently Asked Questions

Just like at home, people abroad can have health problems. You can get sick, sometimes so seriously ill that you need to be hospitalized. If you are involved in an accident, you often need emergency care. There are costs associated with medical care or hospitalization. Those costs can be high.

Every Dutch citizen is entitled to care throughout the world under the basic health insurance. The care that is reimbursed is equal to the reimbursement for this care in the Netherlands.

You should keep in mind that the cost of care in another country may be much higher than in the Netherlands. In Thailand, tourists are regularly taken to private clinics instead of hospitals. Treatment at a private clinic involves high costs that are often not reimbursed.

Reimbursement of expenses incurred is often subject to restrictions. A health insurance company may have included in its policy conditions that medical expenses will not be reimbursed if the expenses were caused by you playing an extreme sport. Extreme sports refers to sports that are dangerous and involve a greater risk of accidents. The following sports, among others, are considered extreme sports:

  • deep sea diving
  • mountaineering
  • gliding
  • bungee jumping

Your health insurance policy terms and conditions will tell you what benefits you are entitled to when you are abroad. To avoid having to foot the bill for incurred medical expenses yourself, it is advisable to purchase additional insurance from your health insurance company that will cover diving-related medical expenses.

Consult the policy conditions of your supplementary insurance and travel insurance to find out the amount and conditions under which you are entitled to reimbursement of medical expenses.
